ABOUT US
Rights In Action Incorporated (RIA) is a community-based organisation formed in August
2001 to provide independent advocacy for people with disabilities who reside in Babinda,
Cairns, Yarrabah, Kuranda, Atherton, Mareeba, Malanda & Yungaburra. In 2017, The
Department of Social Services provided additional funding to assist people with National
Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) appeals, including the broader geographical areas of
Charters Towers, Ayr, Ingham, Port Douglas, Mossman and Daintree. RIA prides itself on
delivering a unique face-to-face advocacy service in regional areas of Far North QLD.

Outcome Working in the very best interest of the vulnerable. Provide long-term people with disabilities benefits and social inclusion, which enable positive impact for the sector.

Self-Advocacy: is the act of speaking up for yourself, whether in a personal or professional situation. The three main components of self-advocacy are;

Ability or capacity to communicate your interests

2.

Recognising your own individual needs, interests and human rights

3. 

Understanding how to help yourself; ability to research your rights to understand the choices, resources or available options

Rights in Action assists eligible individuals in navigating complex systems

Our advocates;

  • do the research and find the relevant resources
  • unpack and explain in easy to understand terms, your human rights as it applies to topics such as:
  • National standards
  • codes of practice or service guarantees

Free self-advocacy education sessions by Advocates who provide information, share resources, give advice and action outgoing referrals for the person with a disability
